I once read; “If you can’t put a little time aside now for recreational exercise, then make sure you put away a lot of time later for illness.” I hear a lot of overweight people complaining that they don’t have enough time to exercise, but they have the time to go to the movies and meet up with their friends for coffee. Now, I’m not saying you shouldn’t do this, but it’s all about having a healthy balance. It’s not about finding the time to exercise, because if you look you wont find it. Make the time and make exercise a part of your daily routine, just as you brush your teeth and shower.
My boyfriend thought that he was quite a fit person although when I met him, he barely worked out anymore. He used to go to the gym regularly, but thought it was so boring and couldn’t keep motivated and as he got busier, his excuse was that he didn’t have the time anymore. His physique was quite a strong build and he had more muscle than fat, but unfortunately his health and fitness had suffered since stopping his training schedule.
Over time, I showed him that if I could manage my hectic schedule and also make the time to exercise and keep fit, than he could too. We started training together outdoors and I showed him a bunch of body weight exercises that he could do all in the comfort of our home. Now three years on and exercising 4 times a week, he constantly tells me he feels more productive throughout the day and he gets so much more done than he used to. His energy levels have increased and he’s in a good headspace for the day and the most important result there’s no more procrastinating and wasting time! And wasn’t that the reason he didn’t want to exercise in the first place? Interesting!
I’ve also noticed that in our training sessions he’s so surprised when he pushes himself that little bit further or completes that extra push up. The look on his face is price less. He now has a good sense of achievement and satisfaction that knowing what he’s putting his body through, is actually good for him.
The best outcome is that he promises himself that he won’t ever make ‘TIME’ the excuse for not exercising. He just thinks of exercise as a part of his daily routine and every little step he takes, is one more step towards bigger and better things!
I have a friend who constantly complained of headaches. I suggested he go see a doctor and get an allergy test. Almost everyday the headaches seemed to get worse, and there seemed to be no limit on the amount of headache tablets and sleeping pills he’d take. It was like his body had become immune to what he was taking and none of it was working anymore!
I spent a whole weekend with him and I observed his diet and moods and this is what I discovered. He lived on coca-cola and junk food like McDonalds and KFC. Now, I was totally surprised as he wasn’t overweight and he didn’t seem like someone who would constantly eat unhealthily, but after witnessing this, to me there was no need to observe anymore.
Now just imagine what all that food he was eating was doing to his insides. Not to mention the amount of nutrients his body was missing out on and the amount of sugar and fats his body was having to process. His body went into overload and was screaming out for help and the headaches were just a result of it all.
Look at it this way, if you put cheap fuel inside your car, it isn’t going to run as well as if you put the premium fuel in your car. It might cough and splutter a little more than usual until eventually it finally breaks down and you have to do something about it. You may not want to, but if you don’t, you’re left stranded with no other options.
If this was me, I’d rather not get to the stranded part as that would totally inconvenience me and cause me a headache in itself, and I believe prevention is better than cure.
So I sat down with him and explained what all that unhealthy food was doing to him, not only internally but externally. I don’t think he really believed me when I told him it was diet related and that maybe if he removed certain types of food he was putting in his mouth and chose alternatives, the headaches might subside.
You know that old saying, It’s a case where people only hear what they want to hear. Well, I saw this first hand as my words of wisdom fell on deaf ears and he continued his bad eating habits and did nothing about it.
A few months later I ran into him and noticed his behaviour was somewhat energetic. I asked what was up, as it had been a long time since I’d seen him like this. He said that his girlfriend had been encouraging him to eat healthier as she was trying to lose weight and wanted him to change his diet with her, so she wasn’t tempted with bad food choices. They had even been exercising together and taking their dog on beach walks. They were slowly changing their lifestyle habits without knowing it and were both working towards their own health & fitness goals. He claims he feels 100% better, more energetic and is quite confident that those headaches were all in the past.
The saying “We are what we eat” is so true, and a lot of people ask me, where do you get all your energy from? You seem to be on the go all the time! I simply tell them, I eat organic fruit and vegetables (mostly I grow my own veggies) and I stay clear of preservatives, flavours, colours, sugars and additives. I don’t eat pre-packaged food or anything processed. Well, you could almost call me old fashioned as I make every recipe from scratch and I watch my portion size and most of all - I exercise.
Your diet is so important to how you function daily. Ask yourself a few questions, Do you feel like you don’t have the energy to exercise? And are you exhausted after a day at work and the thought of exercising on top of your day is out of the picture? Then maybe you should consider observing your diet and changing a few things that might just make all the difference.
